Drs Suyadi, warmly known as Pak Raden, sat comfortably on his plastic chair. He was so absorbed in drawing sketches by himself in a 2 by 4 meter room, besides the windowpane. He was surrounded by the comfort of his past glory, puppets from “Si Unyil”, Indonesia’s first animation series, that he created over three decades ago. Now, this 81 year old man spends most of his time painting and performing as storyteller of fairytales for the kids. Pak Raden has become Drs Suyadi’s image as he dressed as an old man wearing traditional Javanese attire, batik fabric, with thick eyebrows and mustache and speaking in a heavy Javanese accent. QUB TV got a chance to shoot this legendary artist at his humble house where he shared his opinion about art and kids education in Indonesia. Drs Suyadi wouldn’t let us to shoot him before he put on his ‘Pak Raden’ persona, as a part of his professionalism. Funny story behind the camera, this legendary artist couldn’t stop singing to George de Fretes’ Bunga Sakura on our way to his exhibition openings. Apparently, he also has a wide range of knowledge of that song and couldn’t stop spilling information about it. He fell asleep a little while. Not long after that he woke up, continued singing to the songs playing on the stereo lightheartedly.
